When we think about entertaining our kids on a long trip, we’re usually talking about babies and toddlers. They can get fidgety and fussy so quickly. But even older children may get bored when they travel. Here are a few games to keep grade school age kids busy.
1. I’m Thinking of
This is a twist on Twenty Questions. The first player says he is thinking of a person, but he must give that person’s initials. It could be a family member, friend, celebrity, teacher, and so on. The sibling gets a certain number of guesses, and the first player can only answer yes or no. This can get more involved with names of products, tv shows, or anything with a longer name. The child states the initials of the phrase and the other must guess it.
2. Make a sentence
In this game, each sibling gives the other four random letters. The other child must think of a sentence – that makes sense- beginning with those letters. They can be rearranged in any order to make the sentence. For example, if these letters were given – f,s,p,b – they could be rearranged to make the sentence “Some boys play football.” Each child gives the other a different set of letters, and they race to see who comes up with a sentence first. The game can be made more difficult by adding more letters for longer sentences.
3. Make a story
Have kids make up a continuing story. Let them brainstorm a main character, setting, and a big story problem. One of them starts the story. They can stop whenever they want to, even in the middle of a sentence. The next child continues the story. They go back and forth until the story is finished.
4. I Spy
Of course, there is the old game of I Spy. Whether you are traveling by car, train, or plane, there are objects they can think of. One child says, “I spy something…..” It could be a color, a shape, or some other description. The other child tries to guess what the object is. The first child guides her by saying she is “warm” or “cool”, “hot” or “cold”. When one guesses the correct object, it is the other child’s turn.
Travel can be tiring for the whole family. But if your kids can find some simple, creative games to play the trip might be more peaceful and enjoyable for everyone.
