Why are people in awe when people survive traumatic events or beat the odds….?
….when it comes to life threatening diseases? After all aren’t most of those events just statistical probability? So why do we think it is such a wonderful thing if a toddler is the soul survivor of disaster. Whats so special about that survivor? If nothing is due to miracles, there really isn’t anything unique about it.
So if events are the result of statistical probability why have memorials, why have vigils for people, or why have special news coverage on these incidents. Isn’t doing these things admiting that the survival is due to something other than chance, and that something else is playing a part in these outcomes.
Why be amazed at all?
Point. People are never wowed that they survived another day without tragedy. Its only tragedy itself that gives a sense of uniqueness or the incredulous. But yes, probability would mean that some people have to beat the odds. Otherwise they wouldn’t be odds, they’d be certainties.
This doesn’t mean we can’t be amazed when they do happen. The improbable is just as incredible an event as the allegedly miraculous, and to many are exactly the same thing.
