Fisher Price Power Wheels come in two broad age categories – toddlers and older children. Choosing the wrong PowerWheels ride on for your toddler will increase the risk of accidents and limit their ability to physically use it, which ultimately makes your purchase a costly mistake and no fun at all for your toddler. As a parent, I learned these lessons from experience, but hopefully by taking the two minutes or so to read my brief help guide, you can learn from my mistakes which will allow you to spend your money more wisely (and probably less of it) on a ride on toy vehicle for your child that will give them hours of safe fun and not cause you unnecessary hassle and worry every time your child goes to use their new toy.
Power Safety
Choose a vehicle with the lower power battery or one that can be parent limited to a lower speed. Fisher Price powers their vehicles with a choice of either a 6 volt battery or a 12 volt battery. Broadly speaking, the 6 volt battery gives a speed of about 2 to 2.5mph, whereas the 12 volt battery drives the car forward at a speed of up to about 5mph. For toddlers, the fun is in the actual movement not the speed and a toddler in sole control of a ride on travelling at 5mph is a scary uncontrolled situation for them. Fisher Price has intelligently added a speed limiter in some of the 12 volt Power Wheels, which allow the parent to limit the top speed from 5mph to 2.5mph, which is particularly handy if your child is just getting the hang of driving.
Brake Safety
Choose a vehicle that has the Fisher Price Power Lock braking system, if available. From a practical perspective, the standard braking system provided for PowerWheels on the lower speed vehicles is entirely adequate for stopping at those lower speeds. The Power Lock braking system is mainly fitted to the 12 volt vehicles and really does allow them to stop quicker and under more control at top speeds. It’s one thing to move forward, but it is nice to allow your toddler to be able to stop safely before an obstacle.
Design Safety and Ease of Use
Buy a Power Wheels vehicle that your young toddler can actually use themselves, without constant parental assistance. Fisher Price has gone to great lengths to thoughtfully design certain vehicles with toddler unique characteristics and safety concerns in mind. Toddler focussed vehicles contain some of the following clever features:
- Generally lower to the ground, which makes them easier to get on and off for your child and also less distance to fall if they should fall off by accident.
- They are not cluttered with small parts that come away for your toddler to inevitably break off or put in their mouths.
- They have large rounded corners and minimal parts where your young child or their loose clothing can get caught up on.
- Large shielded foot rests at appropriate heights means that a young child can use the step to get on and off, force their feet to stay off the moving ground below and protects their feet and clothes from catching in any moving parts.
- A stable design helps to prevent the ride on toppling over when they mount uneven surfaces or inclines. The vehicles are generally wide tired four wheels and the width span is maximised to provide greater central force of gravity.
- Large button handle bar stop and go control means that your toddler can actually control the vehicle easily with their smaller less accurate capabilities and not contend with the alternative foot pedal controls found in Power Wheels vehicles intended for older children.
- Do not go in reverse like some of the models aimed at older children. This is a good thing, as toddlers have a difficult time controlling a reversing ride on vehicle, as well as the added advantage that they can’t slip the car into reverse by mistake and thrust their head and neck when they take off backwards instead of in the expected forward direction.
