The medieval tournament is one of the several hastiludes or form of martial arts during the Middle Ages. These tournaments are an important part of the life during the medieval period. Other than the tournament, these hastiludes include the more popular joust, quintain, and feat of arms, among others. Individualistic hastiludes were given preference over the group hastiludes, several years later.
A tournament is a general fight with the knights divided into two groups, after which they will charge each other. The joust is more individualistic, with only two knights fighting one another each time. The knights will attack each other while riding horses. Each knight will have three weapons, most common of which is the lance.
Tournaments and jousts were popular during the medieval period, especially to those of royalty. Traditionally, the jousts were done the night before or hours before the tournament. Compared to tourneys, jousting was a better venue for knights to display their skills, since it involved one-on-one battles. The tournament was then the main attraction. However, during the 12th century, jousts were banned in tournaments occasionally, saying that the joust fights distracted the knights from the tournament and were sometimes used as a venue for cheating. By the 13th century, there were already exclusive jousting events done outside tournaments. From then until the 17th century, it was the most popular hastiludes surpassing even the tournament and became a popular European sport.
Of course, because tournaments and jousting are part of the European life centuries ago, there are Medieval Tournament Tapestries that depict this aspect of medieval history. This is not surprising, as several tapestries already illustrate knights and battles as well as other important medieval historical events and legends. “The Royal Joust”, for example, is a popular tapestry piece showing what seems to be the start of a jousting tournament. In the tapestry, the knight is already mounted on the horse. The spectators are eagerly awaiting the start of the tournament – even the royalty are part of the audience. Another popular jousting piece is “The Tournament at Camelot” depicting a jousting tournament outside the castle.
What makes medieval tapestries on medieval tournaments and jousting special is their slice-of-life feel, the notion that this indeed happened during the middle ages yet the event is not as tragic or as grave as other medieval tapestry pieces. In these medieval tournaments and jousting, the images are all there is to it – for example, unlike the unicorn tapestries, there are no religious or pagan symbolisms and undertones in medieval tournaments and jousting tapestries – although it still represents an important part of medieval history, making it a fine addition to any home.
