Nutrition for Good Health
Malnutrition is a word often associated with famine and hunger, especially in developing countries. But another form of malnutrition or poor nutrition is common in countries like the United States and Canada and in areas with a similar regime. This is due to malnutrition by poor food choices and excessive consumption of food.
For a better understanding of the nutritional problems representative of industrialized nations, Awake! Nilda Tirado spoke with the nutritionist, coordinator of the City of New York for improved nutrition Food Education Program, administered by the Cooperative Extension Cornell University. Cooperative Extension programs in the United States provide adequate information for free food and the public to assist in the selection and use to maintain good health. Here are the answers to questions Nilda Tirado a reawakening! representative.
What you say nutrition-related health problems in industrialized countries?
The most common nutrition-related problems is dental caries or dental caries, which affects all age groups. Obesity or overweight, would be next, and iron deficiency anemia, which is still prevalent among women, adolescents and children. However, the concern several illnesses or chronic conditions such as hypertension, atherosclerosis, and gastrointestinal problems that are directly related to excessive consumption of foods high in calories, fat and salt, and low consumption of fiber. These conditions are linked to the many changes in our lifestyle and our eating habits and food preparation.
You mentioned the problem of excess food. Is this really a problem?
Obesity is a serious health problem in all age groups in many industrialized countries. Changes in lifestyle and increased availability food is contributing to it. In schoolchildren, were seen especially in grades one through three, and especially in urban areas where opportunities for exercise are often limited. When a person has more than 20 percent above normal body weight, is said to be obese. A baby can easily overfed becoming an obese child, and then if nothing is done to correct the diet, the obese child becomes an obese adult, with the risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, myocardial infarction, stroke.
What problems meeting with the nutrition of children?
We often find many mothers wean their children early and the introduction of solid foods early. They also tend to give more food than is really necessary for child health. Many mothers, under pressure from family and friends often try to wean their babies at three months. Since the languages are put babies to aspirate fluid and do not propel food to swallow again properly, often spitting baby food. Frustrated by this, mothers invented a sort of baby-shake dilution food of foods in the formula. Then they are fed with a bottle of baby after enlargement of the hole in the nipple. Apart from the risk of suffocation Baby this type of diet increases the tendency to overweight babies and has also been associated with an increased incidence of ear infection.
When is a good time to wean a baby?
Most babies do not need solids until they are around six months, and even then it should be introduced to foods with high protein content immediately. The gastrointestinal system often can not handle the protein, so the bleeding may be light in the intestines, where the mother will not notice. This can be manifested by anemia. There may also be a problem with the development of allergies and skin problems. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that in the weaning of a baby, something easy to digest, such as grains of rice to be given two or three days. And when a new crop is introduced to child, it is suggested that this cereal is only given for three consecutive days to determine if you are allergic to it.
Do you recommend breast feeding?
No doubt. By all means. Breast milk contains not only necessary nutrients in adequate amounts for children, but also antibodies that prevent Many common infections in babies. Babies breastfed rarely obese tend to have fewer allergies and gastrointestinal disorders. Unfortunately, we still misconceptions are some women that if you can afford it, infant formula is best. Although the formula is adequate nutrition, not give the antibody and the perfect balance of nutrients found in breast milk.
About the older children?
We see two problems with young children. First, they are often overfed, and, secondly, they have not learned to eat variety of foods.
Babies need more meals during the day, and sometimes parents keep the routine that the child grows. But children do not need as much food per pound of body weight, as babies do, and should not being forced to eat all the time.
In addition, children often go through food jags, preferring one or two foods all the time. This can create problems if not handled properly. Children may have difficulty in adopting a well balanced diet later. For example, the most nutritious foods incorporated into programs school meals to skip, because children have never been exposed to some of these foods before starting school. Therefore important to encourage children to be open to new foods. Encourage children to choose, prepare, and even food production are ways to make food interesting and fun. Parents also should serve as role models here. Some children are unable to feed themselves. To shorten their food, or because mothers feel that their role is, children are often they feed instead of letting them learn to feed themselves.
Adults have special nutritional problems?
Studies have shown that among all adult income groups consume too much fat and sodium (salt) and not enough fiber. Excessive fat intake is often reflected by an overload or arteriosclerosis in some people. Preference for a high consumption of meat, which is also high fat foods and snacks with empty calories contribute to these conditions, as lack of adequate exercise. Sodium intake is high due to heavy reliance on processed foods, that due to current lifestyle, people find it very comfortable to use. The consumption of fiber, however, is lower because fewer people eat foods in which it operates, including legumes (beans, peas, lentils), fruits, vegetables and whole grain breads and cereals.
Americans consume the majority of large portions of meat that is really necessary. To meet the needs daily protein organization, only about two to three ounces (57 to 85 g) of meat is necessary. However, it is common to see people consume six to eight ounces (170 to 230 g) of meat at dinner only. This is in addition to the protein at breakfast of ham, bacon or sausage and hot dogs or hamburgers for lunch and the protein found in all other foods they eat May The person who sits and eats half a chicken, for instance, actually becomes four times the amount of protein needed for the day and many more calories than necessary. By increasing our sources of feed protein-rich foods, as our fat intake, as almost all are rich fat and cholesterol. The animal has consumed more of products, the more calories and fat. Sometimes, people who want to lose weight to reduce other foods and eat only meat, not realizing that the meat has more calories than pasta or rice.
Do not change the nutritional requirements with age?
Yes and no. We all need the same nutrients no matter what our age, but in different quantities. As we age, we need fewer calories. Because the energy necessary to keep the body decreases with age, although activity and health remain steady in May. If a person becomes less active, much less calories. Thus, older people need to eat fewer calories and more exercise or who are overweight. Sugars, fats, oils, and alcohol should be limited because they are high in calories and lack of essential nutrients.
Our nutritional needs also change during periods of growth in childhood, adolescence and pregnancy and after illness or surgery. During these periods, increase nutrient availability to our body by eating foods that provide more calories and nutrients.
The most common nutritional problem in women remains that iron deficiency. The trend among many women is reducing calories and that may be a good thing for your weight, but iron is difficult to obtain in food, and because it only occurs in certain foods and limited the amount of available iron decreases even more. Iron supplements are often recommended as a safety measure.
Another growing problem, especially among older women, osteoporosis is caused by a loss of calcium in bones. About 40 percent of all women who reach age 80 have this condition. This loss of calcium is actually a normal part of aging, but because women are not usually a good amount of calcium in their bodies, because of a diet low in calcium and decreased activity throughout life what would normally be a rather serious problem. Times more calcium from the bones become less dense, and many a person will fall, appears much shorter. The curvature of the spine is common along fractures of the hip bones and spine. For this reason, calcium-rich foods should be part of the diet lifetime.
What advice would you give to household food healthier?
In addition to what has been said, we encourage people eat a variety of foods to ensure they receive all the nutrients they need. Furthermore, since there appears to be a tendency today to open packages and cans and eating frozen prepared meals, we urge people to see and choose from the wide variety of fresh foods available in the market and then learn to prepare these foods so as to retain nutrients, flavor and color. Stir-frying, steaming, baking and pastry are methods that help to do this and are preferable to boil and frying. It's amazing how many people did not learn to cook a good meal or simply do not feel they have time to do it.
We try to help the People see they can better control what they eat by doing your own kitchen. Instead of falling into the prepared chicken, say it has frozen coated with additives and extra fats a wet home can buy fresh chicken or frozen chicken parts, prepare, add ingredients enjoyed his family and serve beautifully for all to appreciate.
We also encourage people at home to limit the use of commercially prepared mixes such as soups, meat powder help, and cake mixes. They often contain high amounts salt and other ingredients that can not be good for our health. A housewife can prepare some of these mixes and save them for later use. This will save time and money and allows for creativity of the chef. Thus, the housewife can also control what goes into the food that feeds your family, and may limit fat and salt, if it wants. This is almost impossible to do if you use mixtures.
We also urge the housewives will learn what nutrients are necessary for good health and was reported consumers in search of ingredients on product labels before buying. As no new information on food and nutrition in the media everyday housewives should also get advice from reliable sources of nutrition information. These sources include health care professionals in good reputation within the government agencies, hospitals and local health organizations and, of course, Cooperative Extension, who runs nutrition programs in each U.S. state.
