Toddler Diabetes
type 1 diabetes in toddlers?

hi. my sons father is type 1 diabetic. my son is 19 months old and has suddenly had a huge increase in thirst and appetite. he also has this chronic diarrhea thing going on. his weight is good and he appears to be in good health otherwise, maybe becoming a little on the hyperactive side.. but nothing too out of the ordinary. should we be concerned about the increase in thirst and appetite if outwardly he is showing no other symptoms?
should add that we have had him seen for the diarrhea symptoms numerous times, they thought it was celiac for a while. they went away and then reappeared. he is seeing a pediactric GI next week, finally. i am just trying to prepare myself for what might happen when we get there.

If you are unsure it is always best to see a doctor and have them run a blood test or a urine test to find out for sure.

I was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes at age three, I spent much of the two years before that in and out of the hospital with symptoms, but Juvenile Diabetes was so new at the time that the doctors had to do all sorts of things. I am now twenty five.

When I was younger and not yet diagnosed some symptoms that I experienced were always being thirsty. I would wake up in the middle of the night several times, first asking for something to drink and then using the bathroom two or three times before waking up again to ask for more to drink. I would get sweaty for no reason-well actually this is a symptom. Night sweats. If your son wakes up all sweaty, it could be a good sign-and also may mean that at that moment he is experiencing low blood sugar and will need help. I was finally diagnosed one day as I sat watching T.V. turned white as a ghost and could not stop shaking. Of course I was having a “Reaction” or low blood sugar. I was rushed to the hospital and it was confirmed I was Type One.

Since your husband is type one he will probably know what to look for. But write down the things you notice in your son (i.e. night sweats, how often he asks for something to drink, how often he urinates-especially during the night, maybe even use your husbands glucometer and test your sons bloodsugar during times of the day that a diabetic’s bloodsugar would rise- around lunch time, before bed, etc…, if your sons bloodsugar is high at these times-meaning anywhere above 120-this again depends on your comfort level as a diabetic, normal bloodsugar range is 70 to 100. A lot of diabetics feel low at 100 but comfortable at 110 or 120 and that is why I say over 120-OVER 120 is high and may be a good sign of diabetes). Then take all that to the doctor and let your doctor know what has been happening. Doctors are more likely to listen when you have been tracking the symptoms.

As for the diarrhea, I am not familiar with that being an indicator of diabetes, but drinking so much (excess thirst) is a symptom of type one, and could also lead to diarrhea if what he drinks is not being ubsorbed into food-like if he is drinking more than he is eating.

Like I said it is best to just see a doctor and run the tests, if you think there is a possibility at all, but I hope some of this information is clarifying for you.
