Is it safe to give a toddler a daily supplement of DHA “Neuromins”?
I read that you just poke a hole in one oil capsule and squirt the oil into the child’s food (once a day) and this is supposed to be beneficial for his brain for at least the first two years of life.
I already asked my pediatrician, and she had no knowledge of what “Neuromins” are (made from sea algae as opposed to fish oil, which can be contaminated with mercury). Therefore, she said she wouldn’t recommend them. Has anyone else heard about this?
I guess it would depend on where you read this, but I’d put a lot more faith into what my pediatrician had to say. How would you feel a year from now if you discovered your experiment made him really sick?
I asked a registered dietitian about omega 3 supplements, and was told that no supplements are necessary or recommended for children, that all nutrition should come directly from their diet. She said there has been no proof that oils in supplement form have any beneficial effects at all. For my own children, I just couldn’t imagine using them as guinea pigs. The people who sell ‘herbal’ remedies and supplements are not regulated the way the rest of the food and drug industry is, and unfortunately not everyone who is trying to sell you something is going to tell you the truth.
If you want to help increase his brain power, read to him, play games with him, do puzzles with him, colour with him, and keep the t.v. and movie watching to an absolute minimum. Feed him a good, healthy, balanced diet and make sure he gets lots of sleep.
